Nike Markelius SWEDEN
Nike Markelius is a composer, musician, sound artist, and poet based in Stockholm. With a diverse musical background, she has been a songwriter, drummer, singer, and guitarist in various bands and musical projects. In the 1980s, she gained recognition as the drummer and co-songwriter for the iconic Swedish band Tant Strul, and in 2020, she and the band were inducted into the Swedish Music Hall of Fame. Markelius has also composed original music for theater, including productions at the Royal Dramatic Theatre, Radio Drama, Södra Teatern, touring children's theater, and numerous independent theater companies. In these productions, she often performed on stage as a singer and musician alongside the actors. In addition to her performance career, Markelius is a certified sound designer, audio editor, and music producer. She has created music for film, art installations, and educational projects. After many years as a band member, Markelius now primarily works in the electro-acoustic studio. Her recent albums feature piano-based compositions with electronic backgrounds, combining instrumental pieces with vocal-driven songs, both with and without lyrics. Her music is crafted using innovative techniques and a curious approach, creating soundscapes that interact with elements like motion, dialogue, poetry and visuals. Markelius is also an author. In January 2024, she published her latest collection of poems, which is accompanied by an original instrumental soundtrack composed by her for the audiobook. This unique combination of poetry and music has been widely appreciated, with Nike incorporating her music as a backdrop to her live readings. Listen to a sample sound for a literature prize event.
