Levin began his compositional journey in the 1990s, writing contemporary classical music for orchestras as well as theatre productions. After the turn of the millennium, he transitioned into composing music for contemporary dance, and during the past decade he has been deeply involved in writing music for film.
Since 2013, he has been collaborating with Emmy Award–winning documentary filmmaker Nima Sarvestani. Their latest film, Surviving the Death Committee, won the Tempo Film Festival Award in March 2025 in Stockholm and was also screened at the Cannes Film Festival the same year. Levin wrote most of the music for Being Bo Widerberg, directed by Mattias Nohrborg and Jon Asp, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival Classics in 2025 and was nominated for a Guldbagge Award in the Documentary category. In 2023, he co-composed the score for Giovanni Bucchieri’s 100 Seasons, which was also nominated for a Guldbagge Award in the category of Best Film. The film is currently available on ARTE. In addition to his work in film, Stefan has composed numerous contemporary dance scores, performed worldwide by renowned companies such as the Royal Swedish Ballet, Danish Dance Theatre, Acosta Danza, and Hessisches Staatsballett. As a multi-instrumentalist with a strong network of top musicians and a well-equipped 100 sqm studio in central Stockholm, he ensures a creative and efficient workflow at a very reasonable budget. Levin is particularly interested in working on biographical films and documentaries that explore human rights themes. |
