Eicca Toppinen is a Finnish cellist and composer. He studied cello at Sibelius-Academy in Helsinki. He is combining his strong classical background into other music styles he loves, especially metal music. He is most well known from his cello metal band Apocalyptica which he formed in 1993. Apocalyptica has released 10 albums which has sold over 5 million copies world-wide. Their singles have reached countless top 10 and gold and platinum awards around the world. ”I Don’t Care” hitting #1 on US Rock Charts 2008. Majority of Apocalyptica’s repertoire is composed by Toppinen.
Eicca Toppinen has worked as composer, arranger and musician with a lot of writers, producers and mixing engineers like Max Martin, Chris Lord-Alge, Andrew Schepps, Greg Fidelmann, Howard Benson, Rammstein, Metallica and Slipknot. Due to very active touring with Apocalyptica (about 100 shows every year around the world) he has written full score for only two movies so far, ”Black Ice” directed by Petri Kotwica for what he got the Jussi Award 2008 and ”Aquarela” which got nominations for the music at Critics Choice Documentary and Cinema Eye Honors. Eicca has also worked with arrangements for the score on ”Your friends and neighbors”, directed by Neil La Bute 1998. Apocalyptica’s existing recordings of Toppinen’s compositions have been used in multiple movies and series, such as; "VidoQ", "Dollhouse", "Pahat Pojat" and "Smallville". Toppinen´s composition work also includes music for theaters, dance productions, short movies and games. He worked with composition and musical production for ”Wagner Reloaded” - multi-spectacle in Leipzig (2012-13) for over 100 dancers (Gregor Seyffert), MDR-Symphony Orchestra and choir (Kristjan Järvi). He also composed an opera ”Indigo” with Perttu Kivilaakso for Finnish National Opera (2015), ”Crime and Punishment” Finnish National Theatre (2000) and music for ”Death Stranding”-game (2019) by Hideo Kojima. |
