Geir Johnson NORWAY
Geir Johnson passed away on the 16th of September, 2021.
Geir Johnson (b.1953 in Fredrikstad) has been active as a writer, composer and a key figure in the development of Norwegian contemporary music for more than thirty years, first as
music coordinator in the mid-1980s at the Henie-Onstad Art Center outside Oslo, later by forming the companies BIT 20 Ensemble and the contemporary music festival Music Factory in Bergen. In the early 1990's he was also one of the founders of the Ultima Festival and the music theater company Opera Vest in Bergen.
During the period 1998-2009 he was director of the ULTIMA Oslo Contemporary Music Festival, and from 2006-15 he has developed the Transposition program, a collaboration
between seven Norwegian and five Vietnamese music institutions.
Geir Johnson is active as a composer and author. He has received several commissions, including audio installations from two European cultural cities (Stavanger 2008 and Århus
2017), and his music has been performed in a large number of countries. His Music for Camping Women (2008) and Life-Boats (2017) are played daily in different locations
throughout Denmark throughout 2017.
Presently, he is finalising a music film called Clear the saloon! with the SISU Percussion Ensemble as actors, filmed on location in Berlin. The work integrates film and live music.
His latest books are NARA, a description of the meeting with Japanese music (Amfora 2013) Viet Nam Overtures. About the Transposition 2005-15 program. Editor (Amfora 2015)

He has also conducted his own and other composers’ works with The Norwegian Soloist’ Choir and other ensembles, as well as done experimental performances with the TRASH
Ensemble for ten years and performs as a soloist with SISU Percussion Trio in 3.33.33 in Nordmarka annually.
In 2002, he received the Fegersten Foundation's music prize for his continuous achievement on behalf of Norwegian contemporary music. In 2015 he received an honorary medal from the Ministry of Culture in Vietnam for his contribution to the development of Vietnam's leading music institutions, and in 2016 he was awarded the TONO Award.
