Joel Danell SWEDEN
Joel Danell is a Swedish composer whose work often comes with an acoustic and analog expression, stemming from a playful and peculiar approach to melody, harmony and timbre.
A musical upbringing led Joel to an early affection for jazz. After studying upright bass for a number of years, followed by a 10 year stint as a touring jazz musician, his compositional work started taking up more of his time. In 2007, he started writing piano music for the group Musette. This led to his first motion picture score, which since has become his main focus.
Parallel with his film projects, Danell has also released music under the moniker Sven Wunder, as well as the above mentioned Musette. In 2017, Danell was awarded with SKAP’s award for instrumental music.
At the moment, Joel is working on the Swedish Agatha Christie spinoff series ”Hjerson” (2021), directed by Lisa James Larsson and Lisa Farzaneh. Together with Andreas Tengblad, he has written the next chapter in the "Sune" series of films; ”Sune - Uppdrag Midsommar”. More work from Danell includes making music for Swedish tv series - “Enkelstöten” (2 seasons: 2017-2019), directed by Felix Herngren & Emma Bucht. The Swedish film “Tsatsiki, farsan och olivkriget” (2015), directed by Lisa James Larsson and short film “Ambulance” (2016), directed by Sebastian Torngren Wartin.
Danell´s playfulness is apparent in the joyous and jazzy musical soundtrack for "Krakel Spektakel” (2014) and the otherwise tactful symphonic music for ”Min Pappa Marianne” (2020) . These also illustrate his sense of dynamics and drama, that plays a big part in the adventurous sci-fi score of ”Ensamma I Rymden”. The creative mind of Joel Danell often takes the unexpected route, surprising you with unconventional takes on composition. This likely comes from his diverse sources of inspiration, where Danell has a panoramic view of the world, with a certain fondness for the foreign, the strange and the forgotten.
In this view, Joel Danell has found a creative partner in his frequent collaborator Andreas Tengblad. Together, Danell and Tengblad has, among other things, and as previously mentioned, composed the scores for the beloved children's films about "Sune". With a playful touch, they manage to accentuate the lively fantasy and delightful drama of Sune's world. For the warm and sympathetic piano-based score for ”Min Pappa Marianne”, Joel Danell and Andreas Tengblad set out to write something that would match the film’s small-town setting, finding the big emotions in the small expressions. The score managed to underline the importance of the film’s subject matter, while simultaneously conveying the feeling that all will be well in the end.
