Marko Nyberg FINLAND

HARPA nominated 2017 for his score for 'Onnenonkija'

Nomination text
Marko Nyberg is an ambitious younger-generation film composer with extensive experience in many fields of music. His personal use of electronic soundscapes and production techniques gives him a unique, compelling sound. Trusted with adventurous spirit and big ears, his way of composing gives each film he writes a unique sound character.

About Marko Nyberg
Born and based in Helsinki, Marko has run his own sound production company El Camino Helsinki since 2008, composing music for international commercials and short films as well as working as a sound designer. In 2002 he started Husky Rescue, a band that was to gain international acclaim as well as being a vehicle for composing and producing un-compromised and cinematic music according to his vision. He has produced four Husky Rescue albums on UK based Catskills imprint and toured extensively in the UK, Europe, North America and Asia since 2004.
As a film composer, Marko's strengths are his sensibility to nuances of emotion in a scene as well as an understanding of the delicacies of tone in the sonic palette. Marko's music reflects the Nordic nature where, apart from the short summer, light shines horizontally and shadows are long. In the calmness of this landscape lies the real magic, a captivating hidden world. His way of creating the magic musically is to go 'sound hunting' – to find an old broken piano with just the right timbre, or to record the sound of the snow under his feet. His work has always been sound-based and he always carefully considers the texture and hue when choosing sounds for a piece of music. He has merged digital sound synthesis with analogue keyboards and traditional acoustic instruments like the Swedish nyckelharpe. He is inspired by the energy and history of instruments and objects and looks to combining contemporary classical music with minimalist electronic tapestry.
Having started playing the cello at the age of three and having a background in classical music, Marko's sound based approach, knowledge of pop culture and his understanding of contemporary aesthetics give him a unique approach to film music. Trusted with adventurous spirit and sensitive ears, his way of composing gives each film he writes a unique sound character.
