Matti Bye SWEDEN

Matti Bye´relationship with sound and image began at an early age.  Just after his 20th birthday, Stockholm’s celebrated Cinematheque contacted Bye about performing live to silent film screenings.  Although silent film was a blank spot on his horizon, he happily accepted the offer.  Shortly into his first performances, Bye began to recognised the dramaturgical experience he was gaining through providing the sonic language to these historical films.  This marked the beginning of his in depth “university” in film music composition.

Today Matti Bye is recognised as one of Sweden’s most sought-after film composers and pianists working on scores for contemporary film and tv series as well as theatre pieces.  2020 has been a productive year for Matti, having written scores to The Netflix Series "Young Wallander”,  feature biopic  “Tove” directed by Zaida Bergroth about the life of celebrated artist Tove Janson, as well as the Royal Dramatic Theatre production “Maj” by Ellen Lamm.
Matti´s piano playing has catapulted him onto the international stage and won him numerous accolades.   In 2014 he received two of the three nominations for Best Original Music Award at Sweden’s prestigious Guldbaggen – his soundtrack for Faro took the honour (as well as a Nordic Film Music Prize) ahead of his work for The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window And Disappeared.

Through the course of his career Matti has consistently prioritised developing his artistic voice and exploring inner narratives through the creation of  both solo and collaborative albums.  Two of his most critically acclaimed solo works include 2013’s Bethanien and 2017´s This Forgotten Land.  Collaborations with other musicians include Hydra’s Dream, with Anna Von Hausswolff, Kiri Ra! with cult Finnish songwriter Lau Nau and brass and woodwind player Linda Fredriksson, as well as Mambo Noir Trio together with Dennis Egberth and Vilhelm Bromander.
