Sune Martin DENMARK
Harpa winner 2017 for his score for 'Land of mine'
What instrument would you choose to describe the windswept dunes of Vestjylland? Composer Sune Martin has placed the wistfully quivering string-instrument cimbalon in the foreground of a film score that not only supports the action in 'Under the Sand', not only carries the film's dramatic ebb and flow, but also extends its time and place.
A dark piece of Denmark's history from the period just after World War 2 is carrying echoes of a larger world, something epic, timeless or even spiritually. The music is never predictable or external, but rather actively evocative - a great achievement in a drama rich in innocence, evil and violent explosions.
In short the jury has the feeling that Sune Martin both could find (and find the needed energy) to go the famous extra miles to complement the film without resorting to easy solutions. Great! This is the reason why the Danish jury has chosen to nominate Sune Martin for the music to Martin Zandvliet's historical drama, 'Under the Sand'.
The Danish jury consists of film composers Halfdan E and Joachim Holbek and Program Moderator at the Cinematheque, Rasmus Brendstrup.
Since 2003 Sune Martin has scored music for more than 20 movies – among those Under sandet (2015), 10 timer til Paradis (2012) and Dirch (2011). Besides that he is also composing music for ballets and his cooperations with Louise Midjord at the Royal Ballet includes scores for ballets like Interregnum and Dans Mozart.
